Nutrition for Autumn: Simple Ways to Support Your Health This Season

28/09/2026
As autumn arrives in Edinburgh, the weather starts to change quickly. Colder mornings, shorter days and the usual seasonal bugs can make it harder to stay consistent with your health and fitness routine.

At Fitness Yard, we believe that staying healthy isn’t just about what you do in the gym. Nutrition, recovery, sleep and daily habits all play an important role in helping you feel your best.

If you’re training regularly, supporting your body with a balanced diet and staying consistent with your everyday habits can make a big difference.

One simple habit I like to bring back every autumn is my mum’s homemade health potion. It’s a simple combination of lemon, ginger, garlic, orange, turmeric and honey that I keep in the fridge and add to a drink in the morning.

Homemade Health Potion

You’ll need:

🍋 10 lemons, juiced
🧄 2 whole garlic bulbs, peeled and blended
🫚 1–2 large pieces of fresh ginger
🍊 1 orange, juiced with some peel for flavour
🍯 1 cup of Manuka honey
 ✨ Turmeric powder

Blend everything together and store it in the fridge.
Each morning, add a spoonful to your favourite juice. I usually use apple or orange juice. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even add it to a smoothie.
It definitely isn’t the prettiest recipe, but it’s an easy way to include ingredients such as ginger, citrus and turmeric in your diet.

My mum always says, “The older it gets, the better it works.” I’m not sure about that one! 😂

Nutrition Is Part of Your Fitness Routine

There’s no single food or drink that will prevent you from getting ill, but your overall diet matters. Eating a varied diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, adequate protein, whole foods and enough fluids can help support your general health and recovery.

And just like training, consistency matters more than perfection.
So as we move into autumn, don’t just think about your workouts. Look at the bigger picture: what are you eating, how are you sleeping, are you drinking enough water, and are you giving your body enough time to recover?

At Fitness Yard, your gym in Granton, Edinburgh, we help members build sustainable habits around training, nutrition and everyday life.
